Role: UX Design Intern / Duration: 7 weeks / Organization: IBM Cloud & Cognitive Software
Data has been hailed as the new “oil” of our information-fueled economy. And 80% of all data is unstructured – think audio recordings, images, comments, videos, social media posts, anything that doesn’t fit neatly into spreadsheets or tables. Complex, nuanced, and rich.
it is estimated that between “60%-73% of all data within an enterprise goes unused for analytics.” Deriving insights from unstructured data is a painfully time-consuming process that involves manually fine-combing through assets for months. Additionally, companies that use consumers’ personal information must comply with government data privacy policies or face hefty consequences. As such, unstructured data remains mostly uncharted territory.
How might we make the most of unstructured data while making sure it’s regulated and protected properly? As a UX Designer in a team of 5 at IBM, I designed a new feature that would address this challenge and helped conduct research in this domain.
